The Nest is a retail and community playground for parents and young children located , that incorporates a range of different experiences from shopping, eating, and co-working to resting, playing and connecting, in order to create a retail experience that is more personalized, comfortable, playful and community based and fosters bonding between parent and child.
With an increasing number of parents preferring to shop online to avoid the stressful and unaccommodating nature of the current physical retail experience, children are being left out of the retail process. As 1 in 5 purchases are affected by children, addressing, and resolving the nature of this current experience will not only stimulate spending, but will also encourage more parents to transition back to the experience of shopping in a physical retail environment. The Nest is a retail and community playground for parents and young children, that looks at solving this issue by creating a unique, exciting, comfortable and more enjoyable retail experience that encourages parents to include children when shopping.
The Ground Level of The Nest houses the Shop, Eat and Connect & Play Zones, with a central community play area at the centre of the space, market-like retail stalls around the perimeter & outside and The Feathers Cafe located in the back corner. Each level draws inspiration from the forms of common playground equipment, with the ground level taking inspiration from the soft forms of swings and slides. The materiality used creates a soft, comforting and subtle interior experience, mimicing the interior nature of the Pacific Black Duck’s Nest.
Level 1 of The Nest houses the Co-working & Rest Zones, with a central community play & relax net area at the centre of the space, co-working & meeting areas around the perimeter and a separate, sensory, quiet space in the back corner. Each level draws inspiration from the forms of common playground equipment, with level 1 taking inspiration from the enveloping and comforting forms of tunnels. Again, the materiality used creates a soft, comforting and subtle interior experience, mimicing the interior nature of the Pacific Black Duck’s Nest.
The Level 2 Self Care zone is to be developed at a later stage once the project has opened and built some popularity.
