UPHILL

Uphill provides a mixed-use space that emphasising on spiritual and ritual experience to encounter the patrons' psychological wellbeing. Through a sequence of contemplative and meditative place, it is to enhance personal experience. Further, Uphill provides food and cultural experience that encourage interaction to strengthen community affiliation.

Depression is a common mental disorder that affecting one’s physical and mental health. As a leading cause of disability, it has been adding greatly to the global burden of disease and countries’ financial costs. The impact of covid-19 has added extra stress to one’s life and work in relation to mental health. Further, the rapidly growth of population and multiculturalism is bringing opportunity for business growth, therefore, it requests development to adapt the ever-changing culture and society.

Through approaching spiritual experience, the design emphasises on the power of lighting; creates central areas that in contrast with the rest to enhance visual connection; provides variety of sittings to encourage sense of gathering; have different levels of intimacy for contemplation and concentration; have thresholds that guide people slowly start the journey.
